Historic Oakwood YourRaleigh neighborhoods
With tree-lined streets and rambling porches, Raleigh's oldest neighborhood is a romantic Victorian neighborhood. Oakwood dates back to the 1920's and features antebellum and Victorian homes.
The sidewalks along the tree-lined streets make the neighborhood a great place for an afternoon walk. One weekend each Spring you can take a garden tour of some of the beautiful private gardens which are generally not open to the public. Then in December of each year, the Candlelight tour attracts hundreds of visitors to view the interior of select homes.
As you tour the neighborhhood you may notice a wide variety of architectural styles that reflect the influences that predominated at the time they were built as well as the personal tastes of the businessmen and politicians for whom they were built. Even with the wide variety of styles, you will notice some similarities that were largely dictated by the warm Southern climate - many porches, steep roofs, high attics, and latticework on rear porches and under the house. You may also notice that many property lines are marked by low walls.
